Exploring the Tarangire National Park
Your Explore Green Africa Safaris guide will pick you up from your accommodation after breakfast. Today, you’ll journey to Tarangire National Park, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive along well-maintained tarmac roads. The park is named after the Tarangire River, the sole water source for wildlife in the region during the dry season.
Tarangire is renowned for its large elephant herds, offering incredible opportunities to witness these majestic creatures by the river. You’ll also encounter giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests, with predators like lions and leopards often in the vicinity. The park is home to the highest diversity of bird species on Earth, and its landscape is dotted with ancient baobab trees, some believed to be over a thousand years old. After breakfast, you’ll depart from Serengeti National Park and head towards the Ngorongoro Crater. As you approach, your first view of the crater is nothing short of awe-inspiring—seemingly a forgotten world, shielded by towering volcanic walls. Within this vast caldera, you’ll find a pristine wilderness, with expansive savannahs, clusters of acacia woodlands, and shimmering lakes and swamps. The crater was formed millions of years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed in on itself, creating one of the world’s most unique ecosystems.
Descending into the crater is an adventure in itself, with the journey taking you through varied landscapes until you reach the crater floor. Here, you’ll be surrounded by abundant wildlife, including wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and a rich variety of bird species—more than 500 in total. The Ngorongoro Crater is also home to the endangered black rhino, offering one of the best chances to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, often grazing in the open grasslands.
